OWNERSHIP
From the press
“Gideon Kiphibane, a sophomore at the [University of Utah], told me that most of his friends had gone to Brigham Young, but that attending the U had helped him take ownership of his faith.”
Commentary
Maybe it’s our consumer society that leads us to talk so much about ownership in English. Not just physically owning things like a house or a car, but owning a process, a vision, a goal, or even one’s own decisions. It’s a frequent word in business circles.
French has a similar word, the verb s’approprier (This will allow them to take ownership of the project/Cela leur permettra de s’approprier le projet). But knowing that the boundaries between languages are fluid and movable, we went exploring through our archives to see if French said anything else. And sure enough, we found a whole series of ways to talk about taking ownership. One of them is sure to fit your context.
