Don't forget the S in ESG!

ESG-sensitive investors are not just looking to see what you’re doing to protect the environment (the E in ESG) and how ethically and responsibly you are doing it (the G in ESG). They also want to know what you’re doing for society (the S in ESG).

Society, of course, means people—your people and the people all around you. So when you use technology to enhance productivity, for instance, you need to keep people in mind and think about how they interact with technology and how this is entangled with planetary health.

Artificial intelligence is an example. It advances productivity but can also put people out of a job or strain electrical systems to the limit. ESG-sensitive investors want to know how you deal with issues like this.

Although not a standardized component of ESG reporting, human–machine interaction is clearly tied in to the social dimension:

  •  How does your organization foster innovation while remaining committed to society’s values?
  • How are you maintaining organizational trust while harnessing the benefits of purpose-led technology?
  • How can you use AI to achieve the United Nations sustainable development goal of good health and well-being?

There is also the important issue of how you protect client privacy while delivering on the benefits of technology.

Many human–machine interactions advance public well-being. Mobility-as-a-service apps, for instance, are integrated platforms that can nudge users away from private car dependency. They combine public transit schedules, car/bike/scooter sharing availability, ride-hailing services, and cycling/walking into a single interface.

TRSB and our multilingual content management processes are also a case in point:

  •  We draw on the most advanced translation and writing technologies to boost productivity.
  • We recognize the importance of human judgment as a complement to AI automation.
  • We carefully curate all incoming content, analyzing intended audience, inherent risk, budget constraints, and business objectives to optimize production processes.
  • We assign work based on employee interest, skill, and subject matter expertise.
  • We provide ongoing training to ensure our linguists are adept at spotting weaknesses or inaccuracies in automated content.
  • Our work systems broaden inclusiveness by providing easier access to multiple languages.
  • We offer accessibility compliance as an integral part of our document production process.

Responsible use of automation to boost productivity, accessibility, and employee well-being deserves a mention in your ESG reporting. And with TRSB as your content provider, there’s an added benefit: your business communicates effectively and respectfully to a broader global audience.
